IN CONVERSATION WITH

MELODY WEIR

NAGHEDI JOURNAL
Issue 17

This month we sat down with Melody Weir, the visionary behind our office and showroom in New York City’s Flatiron neighborhood. A self-described “creative storyteller,” Melody works at the intersection of art and design as a creative consultant and interior designer. With projects, worldwide, she crafts spaces that reflect the distinct identities of the brands and individuals she partners with.

We spoke to Melody about her creative process, the importance of collaboration and community in her work, and her inspiration for the NAGHEDI showroom.

QUESTION 01

Tell us about yourself and your career.

I’ve been an interior designer, builder, artist for 40 years. I started designing things [as a child] in my parents’ house. Then I went to art school and design school, and from there started working with different companies and doing residential projects. I’ve worked around the world; one of my clients for many years is the sustainable beauty company Davines, working with them to best tell the story of the brand, while keeping in mind consistency and sustainability.

- MELODY WEIR

MELODY WEIR

“I knew from a young age that I was an artist and a creative. I travelled a lot and experienced culture and art; it opened my world.”

QUESTION 02

What are the most important aspects of your design process?

I’ve always been a collaborator. I try to really speak to what people desire, what they want and do it in the best way possible to try to tell their story, while adding my own thoughts and ideas. Community is also very important to me. I want to use local products, materials, fabrics and employ the community [in my projects]. I’m currently working on two hotels in Europe, and I always ask how I can use local materials and support local vendors.

- MELODY WEIR

MELODY WEIR

“Creativity is about collaboration. It's always about connecting with who the person is and asking how we tell their story. I try to speak to who the client is, and translate that into design.”

QUESTION 03

What was your inspiration for the NAGHEDI showroom in NYC?

As soon as I saw the space, I knew we would be able to create a showroom, shared office space, and a conference and design room. We only had a month to design it. I wanted to incorporate texture, fabric, and speak to the artisanal techniques of NAGHEDI accessories. We brought in woven textures like the rugs and the decorative baskets, and used a warm, timeless palette. I didn’t want the palette to take away from the products

- MELODY WEIR

MELODY WEIR

“I wanted it to be a place where people could go to work and they would feel happy, with a sense of calm. And I wanted buyers looking at the products to feel like they were walking into someone’s home.”

QUESTION 04

Where do you source furniture and decor?

For easily available and great designs, I love CB2, Crate&Barrel, and West Elm. I love PAX cabinets from IKEA; I prime and paint them and then add great hardware. Sometimes I cover them with wallpaper. I love to thrift and love Housing Works and flea markets. I am obsessed with the Brimfield Antique Flea Market in Massachusetts, held twice per year. I source on Ebay and Etsy as well. With larger budgets, I like to work with custom furniture makers.

- MELODY WEIR

MELODY WEIR

“Working on a tight budget gives you a creative outlet to really think about what materials you can use—maybe something you wouldn’t think of [if money were no object], becomes a magical piece if you mix it the right way. You have to take time to look around.”
