IN CONVERSATION WITH

MIMI JOON

NAGHEDI JOURNAL
Issue 18

In honor of Mother’s Day, we’re proud to introduce Sara Naghedi’s mother and original muse. Known as “Mimi”—a nickname given by her three grandchildren—she and Sara share a love of fashion and design, rooted in their artistic sensibilities. Admired for her strong sense of self, kind heart, and generous spirit—and, of course, her impeccable personal style—Mimi has spent her life creating beautiful things, from architecture and interiors to fashion and cuisine.

During our conversation she shared a story that spans continents, cultures, and languages. We spoke about navigating new beginnings, her career pivot after twenty years, and how she channels her creativity now.

QUESTION 01

Can you share a bit about your early years?

When I was 16, my father gave me the choice to stay in Iran to study or go to Germany. I moved there, lived with a host family to learn the language, and finished high school. For university, I wanted to go to med school, but because I had studied more math than sciences, I was told to pursue engineering; I chose architecture. After we moved to L.A. to join my family, I still worked as an architect, but my true passion was fashion.

“[Moving to L.A.] was difficult. We didn’t understand the language or the culture. I found myself with time. I told myself, “Now you are here. You use the tools you have to be happy.”

QUESTION 02

How did you make the shift from architecture to fashion?

At night I made things for myself—a belt, a top, accessories—always with a special buckle or embellishment. My friends loved what I made, and asked me to make pieces for them. I loved it so much that I decided to stop working as an architect and try it. I opened a showroom in the fashion district in L.A.; we received so many orders, and then we were in boutiques and stores around the country. I travelled all over the world to source. For me it was all about the adventure.

“It was about the challenge, like now what? You know how sometimes, when you cook something, and can’t believe [how well it turned out], and then other people love it? It was like that—I was very proud of myself that I did something like this.”

QUESTION 03

How would you describe your personal style, and what makes an outfit feel like "you?"

My style is neutral, tonal, classic. No prints, no bright colors. Loose silhouettes. But I like to have fun. I wear something simple with something that makes it pop—jewelry, shoes, a belt. There is always a focal point.

“[When I was designing] glamour was always my favorite—glitter, all the stones, embellishments—and people really liked it.”

QUESTION 04

What are your creative outlets at this stage in your life?

Now when I get up in the morning, I think about the [grand]kids. I like to spend as much time as I can with them. I like to cook and host guests, and go out with my husband. I like to cook Iranian foods, especially these days. I make a lot of different jams—fig is my favorite. I also make quince, sour cherry, and carrot.

- MIMI JOON

SARA NAGHEDI

“There are so many things to love about my mom: she is always learning, growing, and evolving, and doesn’t see age as any kind of limit. Everything she does, she does with elegance and love. And her cooking is hands-down incredible, even the most simple dish. Every bite feels like a hug from her.”
